The anesthesia faded long before the surgery was supposed to end.

At first, I thought I was dreaming.

Everything felt distant and heavy, like my body had sunk beneath deep water while my mind floated helplessly somewhere above it. I couldn’t move my fingers. Couldn’t open my eyes. Couldn’t even tell if I was breathing on my own or if the machines surrounding me were doing it for me.

Then I heard Vanessa’s voice.

“If something goes wrong,” my daughter-in-law whispered softly, “don’t call her lawyer. Call me first.”
