I was crouched near a shallow test hole, soil crumbling between my fingers, dark and loamy, the kind of earth farmers dream about. A couple of cows from the neighboring pasture had wandered close, chewing lazily, watching me with that mild curiosity animals reserve for human foolishness.

Not gravel crunching under work boots. Not the heavy tread of someone who belonged out here. Sharp, impatient clicks, like a metronome out of place.
