At My Grandfather’s Will Reading My Father Said I Would Get Nothing

became part of its routine.

When storms rolled in, I helped secure the porch. When pipes froze, I stayed until they thawed. When paperwork arrived, I sat at the table and read every line out loud so he didn’t have to strain his eyes.

He never asked me to do those things.

I just did them.
